Nail Lacquers
Before laws were put into place in the early 1980’s, nail polishes were available with a formaldehyde solution in the mix. This was known to strengthen nails from the inside out, because it caused a brittleness that normal nails could not achieve. Some salons sold the clear version of this for use on the underneath of nails to help them grow faster as well.

Now, nail lacquers are under more stringent guidelines and some are made specifically to help nails grow, to become stronger or even to get rid of discolorations and stop biting. Here are a few examples of such lacquers.
Clear coats with a bitter taste are available on the market for those with nail biting problems. The abhorrent and acrid smell is enough to turn your nose, but some still try to bite them. If the biter decides to take a chomp, the taste is putrid and annoying, thus making one less apt to bite again. Nail lacquers with diamond dust are available, and these are made specifically to help strengthen the nails. Many other chemicals are involved and can be used to strengthen including a regular intake of Vitamin E which is great for skin and nails. Also a diet rich in collagen will help the nails to grow at a much faster pace, and will help keep elasticity in the skin surrounding the nails.
Lacquers are also available to take away discolorations on nails that you simply brush on and then wash away. These act like bleaching agents and should be read in their entirety before using.
